Vista - how can you be so shit?

I’m just trying to backup my laptop that’s currently running vista so that I can put XP back on. It therefore seems like a sensible time to have a bit of a moan about how Microsoft can spend 5 years developing an operating system that has all of the style and performance of dog dirt.

My biggest gripe has been with the copy process. The windows system for copying files has always annoyed me, it’s never been quick and how many times have you seen it just crash half way through? However… in Vista, they seem to have excelled themselves.

Here’s how I think it goes in the code:

1. Display a stupid message about calculating how long the copy process could take – ensure the user is pissed off before we actually begin.

2. Look at every bit of data for every file and then use a really slow algorythm to guess how long it might take to copy.

3. Repeat step 2 just to make sure.

4. Start copying, only take a good 20 or 30 seconds to determine just how slowly it can get away with copying data.

5. Display a totally inaccurate copying time.

6. Fluctuate the copy time wildly at random intervals.

7. Optionally – crash half way through.

8. Finish

Here’s a good example I’ve just see:

It claims to be transferring at 1.09MB a second and there are a few frustrating things about this:

1. Firstly, surely this should be in Mbits as with everything else in the networking world?

2. Secondly.. if this is in fact megabytes a second and it’s telling me I have 655 megabytes left to go… how can it be guessing a copy time of over 35 minutes? By my calculation it should be 655MB / 1.09MB/sec = 600.92 seconds (or there abouts!) or… as near as matters 10 minutes!

3. How on earth, when I’m on a 54Mbps wireless connection, can it go at such a slow speed? Ok, so I expect to lose a bit, but this should give me about 6.75MB per second, surely it can do better than 1.09MB/sec?

And yes… I have finished this blog post before Vista finished copying my files.

I thank you Microsoft, for giving me the time to write this blog post.

And so the exodus to the land of Apple begins… Although even this shiny new MacBook has its share of problems, funny, I miss Ubuntu more an more… ;)

“Exodus to the land of Apple,” excuse me while I ROFLMFAO in the aisle.

You’d ditch an MS OS for ANOTHER proprietary system (a more expensive one at that), with a far smaller software market? Either you do nothing but wordprocessing and surfing, or you’re an Apple shill.

@Aensland - As it goes, I went to Ubuntu first, I really liked it, I actually miss it a bit now, especially with Beryl and the multiple desktops. I think the next release will be great, allowing people like me who aren’t command line experts to set up dual monitors and the like. Bizzare really that Ubuntu was my gateway to the Mac. As it goes I’m really liking the Mac, so far.

a) Mac’s are no more expensive than other pc’s nowadays (and sometimes less expensive).

b) Mac OS X uses a lot of open source components and is really a lot less of a proprietary OS than Vista.

c) Linux is great, but if you need Office or Photoshop or any mainstream desktop software you’re out of luck. At least with the Mac you can get the Unix command line AND most of the productivity software.

I work tech support and as such have to deal with Vista continually, I have never seen a more broken operating system. At home I use OSX, Ubuntu, and XP. I must say OSX does everything I can do in XP minus the games and you always have the option of dualbooting XP on a Mac if it bugs you that much to be without CS…

Toatally agree, thankfuly as Im playing fewer games these days i have little reason not to use linux.
eg. I just installed a new d-link wireless adapter (ralink provide nice 64 bit drivers) now the installer finished, im sitting watching
“trustedinstaller.exe” hog everything on my system for about 5 minutes afterwoods. My disks are jsut going nutts all the time in this stupid OS.
Thank god desktop linux is getting better and better.

We purchased a couple of Vista laptops for our students to use here at our private training organisation, about the same time I installed Vista that came free with my home Dell machine.

OH… MY… GOD. Seriously, I have been installing and using OS’s since 1991, and I have a degree in IT, and in all my experience I have never seen a more disgusting OS as Vista given the current context of computing. Even Win ME was better, and that is really saying something.

After experiencing this travesty of an OS, and pointing out all of it’s failings to my manager, we have just purchased a load of iMac’s for all of the admin staff to use. I’m happy to say I’m on a 24″ iMac running Leopard, and it’s just heavenly.

Some of our applications are windows only. No problem, VMWare Fusion to the rescue. I’m running XP in a window on mac and it’s running lightning fast, and I can run anything on that VM that I want.

I have Ubuntu on my home Laptop. I have Ubuntu on my home machine running WinXP in VMWare for gaming. I have Mac at work, and I am about to format every client machine to Ubuntu. The only advice I can give - Mac or Linux is FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR better than Vista, or any other MS OS for that matter.

Remember what I said - you can run ANY windows app on Mac through VMWare. There is no reason to ever own or run a windows box again.

Vista Recalled
Written by Non Aucklander

Microsoft has recalled its new operating system Windows Vista.
A spokesman for Windows, Brian Smith-Ogilvy-Davids (or BSOD for short) said that the new operating system is flawless, but has certain flaws.

He then went on with more Microsoft gobbledygook, mentioning advanced user interface matrices, improved customer response times and other rubbish, but everyone in the press conference had already tuned out.

After further investigation and use of Vista, it was discovered that the code was written by a troupe of Madagascar spider monkeys.
As usual, the software has the Microsoft quota of one security flaw per line of code.

This has become standard Microsoft programming doctrine, largely as a result of the same spider monkeys having written all Microsoft software since Bill Gates stole windows 3.1 from Steve Jobs way back in the day.

It was revealed today that the delays in the delivery of Vista were due to the spider monkeys going on strike in sympathy with Bill Gates’ pet goat, who withdrew sexual services due to over use.

Bill Gates had this to say on the debacle “you will be assimilated. Resistance is futile”
