Great big mini app survey

A couple of weeks ago I asked my Twitter network to fill in a quick survey to gather some data on which online applications people were using with their businesses. It’s not supposed to be some super analysis, just a quick feel for the market and I promised to share, so here are the results.

The survey is still there if you want to increase the usefulness of this data.

There were 53 responses, the majority being from developers, with a CEO, and a few project managers interspersed here and there. The high developer count is obviously biased by the fact that I pretty much used Twitter only and I have lots of developer followers, I’m sure this would be very different if I’d approached my facebook or LinkedIn network.

A quick summary before the details:

Wordpress is by far the most popular CMS with 43%. Google Docs closely followed by Basecamp are way ahead in the most used applications.

The most interesting statistic from our point of view is how much people pay monthly. The two sweet spots seem to be zero, and twenty six to thirty dollars.

The most requested features by clients are CMS, mailing list and SEO. No surprises there.

How much do you spend monthly on online applications?

Interesting that $26-$30 is the sweet spot here, no suprises that 0 is the most popular, although I wonder how long it will be before that changes?

How many websites do you look after?

It appears that you seem look after a few websites, possibly for yourselves and friends or for your clients, the 11-20 group seems a little odd.

What online applications do you use?

Obviously the list offered wasn’t that comprehensive, but we can plainly see the two most used, I was quite suprised by Campaign Monitors high level, who said email was dead?

What’s your main CMS platform?

I have to say that I was pretty suprised by this one. Don’t get me wrong, I think Wordpress is great, but that’s a pretty big margin. I think this is worth investigating further.

Wrapping up

A small but useful set of data for web startups, I intend to extend the data by now putting the survey to my LinkedIN network to see how that changes what we have. I suspect that ZOHO may grow a bit and basecamp to go down…

FYI we used Google surveys which is built into Google docs spreadsheet and I have to say it’s really easy to create something quickly and best of all it’s free.

Interesting read Mark, I think Wordpress is great too as people generally find it easy to use. I’ll have to check out Google surveys…
